Allen Ginsberg 's Howl (1956), William S. Burroughs ' Naked Lunch (1959), and Jack Kerouac 's On the Road (1957) are among the best known examples of Beat literature. The Beat poets were a group of friends living in New York City in the decade following World War II who, through their collaborations, experiments with poetry rhythms, and questioning of the status quo, forever altered the relationship of poetry to popular culture. Young beatniks reading poetry together, 1950s. Ginsberg’s role in the Beat Generation and subsequently in the counterculture of the 60s and 70s was incomperable. His consistently confessional and political poetry will stand among the best of the 20th C. I think it really is Beatnik Poetry; I am reminded of Kerouac fast paced, edgy, sometimes satire and sometimes sarcastic.
